Monarch butterflies migrate between Mexico and Michigan and even Canada and like all species that are food for others must defend themselves against predators. The Monarch’s primary defense is being unpalatable due to toxins they sequester from milkweed host plants they consume as caterpillars. The presence of the toxin is signaled to predators via their bright orange wing coloration. Science communicator Matt Deighton will explore the possible links between the milkweed species Monarchs consume and the intensity of their orange and black chemical defense signal. This program is part of the Grandville ESC's Spring Speaker Series held at the Grandville branch of the KDL library.
