The austerity of winter is replete with a deep feeling of appreciation for whatever warm hearth and shelter we are lucky enough to have, we gather with family and friends and mark the seasons and the years, the early dark, the woodsmoke, the wheeling of the stars through the skies of the long nights.
Often we contemplate time, mortality, brevity, seasons, make resolutions, rejoice and grieve, hope, and lay still resting and listening to the silence. In turning to those timeless concerns of life, love, and loss, grief and joy, light and shadow, this class will turn to art of the past and present for inspiration in exploring these basic and eternally moving and relevant themes.
We will work with charcoal, ink wash, and oil, and make small quick works in response to a selection of source paintings and drawings, and although we will focus on feeling, and the all too human enormity of these emotions and experiences, we will also take care to note that feeling always arises from form, and that by studying masterpieces, we can absorb some of their wisdom in creating this critical element of the magic of drawing and painting.
