2025 Standard Bank Young Artist for Poetry, Modise Sekgothe, comes to the city's preeminent creative joint, Lit.Culture, on 30 May 2026 for The Wilderness and Other Worlds.Ahead of upcoming projects, the show marks a return to solo exploration after a lengthy collaborative season. It returns to The Wilderness and the projects that came before it, tracing a journey across the years while hinting at what is still to come.
The Wilderness and Other Worlds unfolds as a realm of word and sound in synthesis, a single voice multiplied in chorus with itself, a series of loops and laments lingering in the void, waiting to be led by language to the light.
Wailings and words drawn from the worst in all of us are reworked into signposts that seek not only to name the darkness, but to move through it.
Sekgothe recently published Gabo Legwala, his award-winning theatrical play, adding another chapter to a body of work that continues to shift between poetry, performance, and theatre with uncommon precision.
