About this Event
Kintsugi (金継ぎ, gold joinery) is the Japanese craft of repairing ceramics. Fractures are no longer weak points, but beautiful elements. This philosophy is often taught as embracing imperfections in our life, the beauty of human flaws.
During the 2.5-hour workshop, you will learn how to repair ceramics with the modern Kintsugi methods finishing the joints with gold powder. Bring a couple ceramic pieces. All materials will be provided to repair them. Tools are returned to us.
Workshop instructions:
Bring one or two damaged ceramics. The material must be ceramic, pottery, or porcelain. No glass or wood. A damaged family heirloom or items that are broken into numerous pieces would be challenging to attempt for the first time. Instead, bring something easier.
Items must be glazed, cracks must be within 5 pieces and chips must be within 1/2 inches. A few ceramic bowls will be available for purchase at the workshop. Items' original size must be within 12 inches. The larger and heavier, the more difficult. Decoration is recommended after all repairs have been made.
While the traditional Kintsugi requires skills, techniques, and time, this modern method is for all skill levels 18yo & up!
All materials are included in the workshop fee. Bring a cardboard box or something similar that will allow you to carry your items home without touching the repaired parts.
T his class will be taught by Emi Joyce, formerly a full-time bench jeweler and apparel designer, currently a kintsugi restorer and a natural dyer. You can learn more about her kintsugi work via Instagram, @modernkintsugirepairpdx
Note on Sliding Scale Pricing:
Repair PDX seeks to both pay equitably and keep ticket prices accessible.
Not every event we run is independently solvent. We provide sliding scale, free tickets for volunteers, and other low cost opportunities because of our values. Thus, we rely on those with more financial support to pay the higher end of the sliding scale in order to offset the low-cost tickets. Thus, you will see a variety of ticket prices for the same event and we encourage you to pay what you can.
Proceeds from tickets go directly to paying our wonderful instructors, providing materials for the class, and continuing to host events and workshops like this one!
