BEYOND, BELOW, AND ABOVE: Beyond, Below, and Above is an improvising trio of Abi Lee (piano), Julien Wilson (saxophone), and Dylan van der Schyff (drums/percussion). Curated by Lee, their self-titled album (to be released) is part of Lee’s ongoing research in structured improvisation. This unique collaboration between internationally established improvisers across Canada, Korea/NZ, and Australia is one of the most exciting collaborations in Naarm. Van der Schyff’s delicate conversational approach, Wilson’s uplifting sound, and Lee’s bold and narrative way of improvising bring surprises in the trio’s performances as they effortlessly weave in and out of free improvisation. Lee’s cultivating way of storytelling show her influences from Ornette Coleman, Kris Davis, and Tim Berne.
ABI LEE:
Abi Lee (she/her) is a pianist, composer, and improviser based in Naarm/Melbourne, AUS. She relocated to Naarm from New Zealand to live and study jazz and contemporary improvised music. Driven by her “deep commitment to improvisation” (Andrea Keller, 2024), Lee continues to explore the possibilities and impossibilities of piano and improvisation. Lee’s work blurs the lines between percussive and harmonic aspects of the piano across genres (such as contemporary classical and free jazz). Lee constantly presents her projects across Australia, taking part of major jazz festivals. From solo prepared piano to large ensemble works, Lee’s compositions bring out her unique view of the world with “musical depth and vulnerability necessary to be engaged in high level real time improvisation” (Stephen Magnusson, 2024).
