MJ Upstairs was obsessed with GarageBand as a kid. she loved the immersive process of layering her voice into angsty, blown-out demos on the family computer.
She started playing basements around Philadelphia and developed a grittier. loop-heavy sound. Writing from the floor of bedroom after bedroom, she carved a lyrical niche; commiserative, tongue-in-cheek, intimate, anthemic, poetic, all messed up.
