Join us on Thursday, June 18 for an evening with Mitchell L.H. Douglas, author of the newly released poetry collection, Universal Corner (Persea Books). Douglas will be in coversation with poet David Strange.
Mitchell L. H. Douglas is the author of dying in the scarecrow’s arms, \blak\ \al-fə bet\, winner of the Persea Books Lexi Rudnitsky/Editor's Choice Award, and Cooling Board: A Long-Playing Poem, an NAACP Image Award and Hurston/Wright Legacy Award nominee. His “Poem that Begins w/a Tweet About Gwendolyn Brooks” was featured in This is the Honey: An Anthology of Contemporary Black Poets edited by New York Times best-selling author Kwame Alexander. His fourth book of poems, Universal Corner, speaks through the lens of punk and Hip-Hop to offer a unique perspective of life in the Midwest.
A 2021 National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellow, he is Associate Professor of English at Indiana University Indianapolis, a Cave Canem alum, and cofounder of the Affrilachian Poets. His visual art has been published in The Adroit Journal, The Offing and Callaloo.
David Strange is an Indianapolis-based teacher and poet. He is the host of the monthly reading series Listen, Please every second Thursday at the Chatterbox, the curator of the poetry and art event This Could Be Everything (Sunday, June 28th at The White Rabbit), and co-editor of the poetry/art journal Door's Always Open. You can find his work in the Driftwood Press, Anchorage Press, Dogwood Alchemy, IndyUntitled's Insert Title Here, and forthcoming in the summer edition of The Indianapolis Review, among others.
