On Sunday, May 31, 2026 at 7pm, the adventurous new music presenting organization Composers Concordance returns to Ki Smith Gallery to present Missing Link Ensemble. A formidable set of brazen contemporary compositions, scored for a unique combination of instruments and electronics, is performed by the superb trio of Eric Schultz - bass clarinet, Eddy Malave - viola, and Javier Oviedo - saxophone. Additionally, the ensemble's dynamic violinist Lynn Bechtold will perform several works. Featured on the program is an impressive group of composers hailing from Argentina, Brazil, Serbia, and the U.S., including Lynn Bechtold, Natasha Bogojevic, Dan Cooper, Harry Crowl, Tiago Gati, Kino Lopes, Milica Paranosic, Gene Pritsker, Emiliano Revert, Eric Schultz, and Gabi Yaya.
ERIC SCHULTZ is an American clarinetist acclaimed for his concerto performances, inventive chamber collaborations, and trailblazing interpretations of new music. He maintains an active concerto schedule performing with orchestras across the globe, and can be seen and heard from Netflix to National Public Radio. Through bold collaborations with some of today’s most innovative composers, Schultz is a driving force in shaping the future of the clarinet. He has premiered over 50 solo and chamber works, many written for and dedicated to him, dramatically expanding the instrument’s repertoire and expressive range. Dubbed a “superstar muse” by renowned composer Amanda Harberg and “a sensation” by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Corigliano, Schultz is known for his liquid, soulful tone quality and singular abilities on the instrument including limitless technical facility, improvisations that span many dialects, and an impossible five-octave range through the stratosphere celebrated as “screaming clarinet.” Schultz serves as Associate Professor of Clarinet at Coastal Carolina University, where he is coordinator of the woodwind area and director of the Center for Collaborative Research. Schultz completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in clarinet performance at Stony Brook University. As a Buffet Crampon performing artist, he performs exclusively on Buffet Crampon clarinets.
A native of Long Island, New York, EDDY MALAVE holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from The Juilliard School in viola performance. He has performed in numerous recitals and as an orchestral member throughout Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, Asia, and the South Pacific. Mr. Malave has also performed before President Bill Clinton at the Middle East peace talks (Israel Forum Policy) and for Pope Benedict during his visit to New York City. He has also worked with artists as diverse as Placido Domingo, Renee Fleming, Deborah Voight, Sir Elton John, Billy Joel, Patti Lupone, Bryan Adams, Andrea Bocelli, and Dimitri Rostropovich, to name a few. He has collaborated with DJ Victor Calderone, A.R. Rahman, Yanna Avis, John Lloyd Young, and many other prominent artists in various venues around the world. Currently as an active freelance violist, some of the ensembles he has performed with in the NYC area are the Se Jong Soloists, the Orchestra of St. Lukes, NYC Ballet, American Ballet Theater, and NYC Opera. He has played in a number of Broadway shows including The Phantom of the Opera.
JAVIER OVIEDO stands as one of the brightest soloist performers of the classical saxophone world. Acclaimed for his lustrous tone, passionate musicianship, and formidable technique, he has kept alive the excitement and versatility of his instrument through his tireless efforts and continuous research. Javier has a big contribution not only in reviving the old compositions but also in commissioning and premiering dozens of new pieces. His debut recording, The Classical Saxophone: A French Love Story, features original music for saxophone and orchestra from the 19th and 20th Centuries. The album garnered tremendous acclaim and appreciation from music critics and the public at large. In 2019, Javier began a project to record the major works for saxophone and orchestra with the City of Prague Philharmonic. He is the Executive Director and co-founder of the Classical Saxophone Project (CSP) in New York City. It’s mission is to promote the classical (non-commercial) repertoire of his instrument. For more than 10 years CSP has provided opportunities for musicians of all levels to perform for the New York audience. CSP is a non-profit organization that preserves, promotes, and educates.
The concert will also be live-streamed on Composers Concordance's Facebook Page.
