About this Event

Event Details

The 2024 U.S. presidential election has been mired in false claims and half-truths on social media by political actors, scams by outside organizations, and Russian disinformation campaigns. This talk provides an overview and unpacks a few of the major false information and disinformation campaigns this election season on Twitter and Facebook and on paid ads on Facebook and Instagram. It explores the effect of these campaigns on delegitimizing democracy.

Speaker Bio:

Jennifer Stromer-Galley is Professor in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, USA. She is author of Presidential Campaigning in the Internet Age (2nd. Ed., 2019), which provides a review between 1996 and 2016 of the ways U.S. presidential candidates have used digital technologies for strategic communication. She’s been principal investigator of over $15 million in grants to support research on cognitive biases, complex reasoning, and strategic messaging during political campaigns. Her current research project studies misinformation in the 2024 presidential election with a generous grant from Neo4j. About Stevenson Trust

The Stevenson Trust was established in 1921 by a bequest to the University of Glasgow from Sir Daniel Macaulay Stevenson to fund a Lectureship in Citizenship.‎

Since 2006 the Trust has promoted a series of annual lectures on citizenship themes. These are held at the University of Glasgow and open to academics, students and the general public. Speakers have included Professor Sir Bernard Crick and other politicians, academics, political theorists, journalists, educators and cultural commentators. The Trust also supports a number of other activities concerned with citizenship, such as conferences and events for schools.
