About this Event
Miriam Horn will speak about and sign her new book, Homesick for a World Unknown: The Life of George B. Schaller, on Tuesday, June 30th at 6:30pm, at Boulder Bookstore. She will be in conversation with Hillary Rosner, author of Roam: Wild Animals and the Race to Repair Our Fractured World, for this special event.
About the Book:
In 1959, though just twenty-six years old and a graduate student, George B. Schaller shrugged off warnings of mortal danger and set off for the Belgian Congo to do what no other scientist had dared: study mountain gorillas, the real King Kong, by living alongside them. Boldly refusing arms and retinue, Schaller and his wife, Kay, established a home in the jungle and came to share the apes’ rhythms and rules. His mission to revolutionize our perceptions of wild animals would propel him across four continents and inspire generations of scientists.
In Homesick for a World Unknown, Miriam Horn draws on thousands of pages from Schaller’s journals and letters, globe-spanning interviews, and two journeys into the field with the legendary scientist himself to trace his emergence as the founding father of modern wildlife conservation.
About Hillary Rosner:
Hillary Rosner is an award-winning science journalist who has reported on environmental issues from around the world for National Geographic, The New York Times, The Atlantic, Scientific American, Wired, Audubon, and many other publications. Her book ROAM: Wild Animals and the Race to Repair Our Fractured World (Patagonia, 2025) is about how our human-engineered world has cut off movement pathways for so many species—and efforts to knit the world back together so that both humans and wild animals can thrive. She lives in Boulder where she teaches journalism and science writing at the University of Colorado, working in the Center for Environmental Journalism and overseeing the Ted Scripps Fellowships.
