Mini Makers Cycle 1: Who I Am
Welcome to the very first cycle of Miss Ash's Art Classes — and we cannot wait to meet your little artist!
This week Mini Makers explore the work of Amy Sherald, the contemporary portrait painter best known for her iconic portrait of Michelle Obama and her luminous, joyful paintings of everyday Black Americans. In age-appropriate, hands-on ways, we'll ask the big question at the heart of Sherald's work: what makes me, ME? Over four connected days, your child will build a complete Amy Sherald–inspired self-portrait from scratch.
Day 1 they explore materials and create a patterned paper filled with their favorite things — stars, animals, colors, whatever makes them them.
Day 2 they make a simple black-and-white self-portrait figure on a bold background color of their choosing, just like Sherald's signature grayscale style.
Day 3 they cut their patterned paper into clothing and collage it onto their portrait, bringing all three pieces together into something genuinely beautiful.
Day 4 is Gallery Day — families are invited in for a make-and-take activity together, and every little artist shares their portrait with the room.
Every class includes an art history moment, a discipline-based learning game, a brief demo, and plenty of guided creative time; no experience needed! Just joy, real art education, and a finished piece your child will be proud of. This is a full four-day cycle. All four days connect — registering for the complete cycle gives your child the full experience!
