Come along and immerse yourself in an afternoon of mindful painting with Artanda
About this Event

We are delighted to be collaborating with Helena at Artanda Peace and Painting.

As part of The Big Reshape, a community-led programme facilitated by Roots to Change that aims to bring about positive change towards building a fairer and more equal borough where women and girls can live free from harm, we are bringing you a chance to immerse yourself in an afternoon of mindful painting and reflection.

Painting is a wonderful way of feeling peaceful and connected to the present moment. In this Mindful Painting session, we will explore a seven-stage method that will allow you to paint the world around you. We will explore a range of watercolour techniques, working from photographs of Tooting.

This workshop is free of charge. All materials and snacks included. All young adults and adults and all genders welcome!

Where: Tooting Library, 75 Mitcham Road, London, SW17 9PD

When: Saturday 20 April 2024, 1-3.30pm

The event will also present an opportunity to have a look at The Big Reshape art installation that features community artwork that imagines a nice, kinder world, highlights from Roots to Change's research report, suggestions on what we could do individually and collectively to help address the issue and more information about The Big Reshape programme.

This exhibition will be up in Tooting Library between 8 April and 5 May 2024.

About The Big Reshape

The Big Reshape (towards equality) is a community-led programme, facilitated by Roots to Change CIC that aims to influence positive change towards building a fairer and more equal borough where women and girls can live free from harm.

It was designed in response to findings from a research study that Roots to Change facilitated and in which over 150 people participated that pointed to the need for a reshape in how we address violence directed at women and girls.

A need for a reshape in... our understanding of the issue, how we talk about it, the norms that condone it and the systems that support it, our ideas and expectations and relations between people.

The full report can be found here.

About Helena and Artanda

Over the years Helena has worked with thousands of students as a fully qualified secondary school Art teacher, a life-drawing instructor and now as founder of Artanda.

Throughout her journey (completing her Art History degree in 2017, studying art at an Atelier, training to teach at UCL, Setting up a Life Drawing Co-op and teaching in London Secondary Schools) she has been exploring our relationship to Art Making and how we can find that balance between trying to be the best artists we can be AND feeling relaxed and happy in the process (without the frustration and negative self-talk that can often accompany our practice!)

Research has shown that we get more benefits from visual arts, when we engage with them in a community setting. That's why she set up Artanda. It's her local art community- and she hopes it will become yours as well!
