A retrospective review of Mike Rudd’s incredible musical journey, presented by Mike Rudd’s Indelibles. Don't miss this very special event, showcasing the musical journey of Mike Rudd. A brilliant night of Australian music history, with Mike supported on stage by some of the greats. From his early days playing with Ross Wilson's & The Party Machine, Mike Rudd already had a way of crafting songs that stood out from the rest of a very crowded musical market. Apart from also founding SPECTRUM, the band who is deservingly famous for the opening few bars of harp of the ‘Money’ song, Someday I’ll Have Money, also occasionally known by its actual title, I'LL BE GONE, which is a bonafide Australian classic song - and a national No.1 hit way back when in 1971.
As a matter of fact, in 2001 APRA asked 100 Australian musicians, writers and critics to vote for the best and most significant Australian songs of the past 75 years. I'LL BE GONE, which was the first single released by Spectrum, made the final cut of 30 songs. The song begins with Rudd's long harmonica riff, and features a laid-back groove and counterculture inspired lyrics. The film clip that accompanied it provides a time capsule of that era.
Mike Rudd's bands' have left a significant legacy for Australian music. Mike's early days with The Chants in the '60s, and then with Ross Wilson's The Party Machine in the late '60s, set the groundwork Spectrum, and his alter-ego band The Indelible Murtceps, both which were a foundation of the Blues orientated heavy rock music period in Australia (1971 to 1973). Next for Mike came the brilliant Ariel (1973 & 1974), a band which was a more exotic spectacle comprising weird and wonderful costumes, exotic light shows and smoke bombs. Instant Reply followed (1978 & 1979), who later changed their name to the Mike Rudd & The Heaters. As trends changed, the Heaters become Rudd’s post punk, new wave band, touring frequently during 1979 to 1982. Mike Rudd briefly returned to his roots with the Living Legend Blues Band in the '80s.
It's well over 50 years since the release of the 'Money' song, but Mike Rudd's musical journey has stood the test of time, and his voice, his energy on stage, and the incredible sounds he gets from his harmonica is still something very special.
Whilst many of the other great Australian artists that were there at the beginning have stopped performing, Mike Rudd continues to deliver sell-out shows, with a back-catalogue of songs that instantly transport you to the good ol' days of Australian music.
MIKE RUDD'S Indelibles are: Peter "Robbo" Robinson on Drums; Broc O'Connor on Bass; Daryl Roberts on Keys; with Special Guest George Butrumlis as the Accordion Meister and Spectrum’s Incendiary Guitarist, Brenden Mason.
