About Portland Revels and the Midwinter Revels:
Portland Revels celebrates the seasons through song, dance, story and ritual of the past and present, creating community across generations and cultures.
The Midwinter Revels is steeped in traditions of song, dance, poetry and performance from a wide variety of cultures. Each year a cast of up to 70 come together to perform, including a multi-generational chorus, actors, musicians and dancers. There are specific Revels traditions that appear every year in each production, regardless of the culture that is being celebrated. These can include Morris dancing, a Mummer’s Play, Dona Nobis Pacem, Susan Cooper’s poem “The Shortest Day”, and Abbott’s Bromley Horn Dance, an ancient processional with roots dating back centuries.
