After a 5 year hiatus, Midwest Funk Association is back!
Waajeed pushes the sound of his native Detroit in a fresh and exciting direction, with a unique musical style that has been forged over more than two decades across a variety of genres, going back to his days as a founding member of the hip hop collective Slum Village, and up through establishing himself as one of the freshest voices in house over the past decade through several instant classic releases on Tresor, Planet E, and his own Dirt Tech Reck label. Beyond that, he has been putting much of his energy over the past few years into building up his Underground Music Academy on Detroit’s North End, a music school whose aim is to invest in and educate future leaders of electronic music, passing on Detroit’s rich musical legacy to a new generation.
Waajeed will be joined by two DJs who need no introduction in Minneapolis, two of the most respected leaders of our dance community and biggest champions of the funky Midwest sound. Jeff Swiff is well known for his deep and soulful sound as a DJ and producer and is one of the key players behind the Nicewon Recordings label and the House Proud event series, both of which plant him firmly on the flagship of Minneapolis house. DJ Nola has established another quintessential party in her monthly Freak Of The Week parties on her reputation as one of the most skilled and baddest DJs and party throwers in town. Over the past year she has pushed her party to new heights with guests from around the Midwest Funk Association, and even brought her party to Detroit, where she also played at the Charivari festival in 2023.
