It's a new month and a new Midnight Movie @ 8 at Ten10 Brewing's B-Side, where you get the best in cult cinema, beer, and food at a much more reasonable hour. I've been sitting on this one long enough. In case you haven't heard, the reimagining of "The Toxic Avenger," directed by the very-talented Macon Blair (see his directorial debut "I Don't Feel at Home in this World Anymore" and check his acting work in pretty much anything Jeremy Saulnier has done) and starring Peter Dinklage as Toxie, Elijah Wood, Kevin Bacon, and Jane Levy, is FINALLY hitting theaters this summer after floating around in distribution limbo for a couple of years. I am pretty damned excited about this, so I figured it would be a great time to introduce/reintroduce everyone to the city of Tromaville, NJ and its local mutant superhero, The Toxic Avenger.
Milquetoast janitor, Melvin Junko, is constantly being terrorized at the health club he works at by some of Tromaville's worst group of people. That is until the day when they take their harrassments too far and poor Melvin ends up taking a spill into a barrell of Jersey Juice (aka toxic waste). What emerges from the goo is New Jersey's first superhero, spelling doom for all evildoers and bullies everywhere. Directed by The Man himself, Uncle Lloyd Kaufman, and his partner in all things Troma, the enigmatic Michael Herz, 1984's "The Toxic Avenger" is the kind of flick other superhero movies wish they could be, spawning 3 sequels, an animated series for kids, a video game, 2 comic book series, and now a reboot.
While the movie starts a bit after 8, I can't let the weekend of 4/20 go by unnoticed, so I will be playing a collection of kooky drug prevention videos from the 70's starting at 7:00, if you feel like showing up a bit early and want to be hillariously scared straight.
