Mid-Century Dinner Series Presents: Backyard Bash

Fire up the grill and pass the lemonade! The Mid-Century Dinner Series is back, and this time, we are stepping into an idealistic 1950s/1960s suburban paradise for the ultimate vintage Backyard Bash.

We’ve captured the sun-drenched charm of a nostalgic summer cookout and brought it right into Moxie. If you love vintage aesthetics, immersive dining, and unique local experiences, this is the premier Des Moines summer event you cannot miss.

To make sure this experience is completely authentic, we are partnering once again with Andrea Oleson of @mylittleoldthings. Andrea is transforming our space into a picturesque mid-century backyard haven.

• The Vintage Photo Station: Strike a pose in front of a custom-painted retro backdrop complete with lush astroturf, handmade rose bushes, and a classic picket fence. We’ll have incredible vintage props on hand—including antique picnic baskets, aluminum pitchers, authentic 1950s soda bottles, and old magazines.
• Film Photography: Andrea will be shooting on a 1958 camera! You'll receive a physical film photograph mailed to your home after the event as a unique keepsake.
• Retro Backyard Games: It wouldn’t be a real cookout without some friendly competition. Get ready for a hula hooping contest, 1950s trivia, and a lively game of hot potato played with a real ear of corn!

Our culinary team is diving deep into vintage cookbooks to craft an upscale, 5-course feast. We are taking the comfort food of the 50s and 60s and elevating it into a high-end, multi-course dining experience.

• The Cocktail Hour (5:30 PM): Kick things off with refreshing retro cocktails, signature summer blends, and a selection of nostalgic appetizers.
• The 5-Course Dinner (6:30 PM): Sit down for a beautifully curated meal featuring gourmet, modern twists on classic American cookout staples.
• The Gelatin Tradition: Yes, the jiggle is back! In true Mid-Century Dinner Series fashion, the courses will feature multiple molded gelatin creations—both sweet and savory—celebrating the peak of mid-century culinary creativity.
