About this Event
About This Event
This 2-day intensive microbiology course is designed to help participants with some previous laboratory experience develop practical microbiology skills in a real lab environment.
BioGrad is a UK-based life sciences company operating across diagnostics, biobanking, clinical research, and regenerative medicine, including work in stem cell and advanced therapies.
Delivered by BioGrad Education, a training provider that has supported 1,000+ learners in the last 2 years, this course reflects the techniques and standards used across microbiological research and industry laboratories.
Training takes place in BioGrad’s modern, industry-standard laboratory facilities, giving you exposure to the equipment and environment used in real-world lab settings, something that sets this experience apart from typical classroom-based courses.
Across two consecutive days, participants will gain hands-on experience in techniques essential for microbiological research, including bacterial culturing, antibiotic sensitivity testing, Gram staining, and microscopy.
Unlike theory-heavy courses, this session is fully hands-on, allowing you to apply microbiology techniques under close supervision from experienced scientists.
What You’ll Learn
During the course, you will cover:
Day 1 ( Sat 30th May: 09:30-16:00)
- Introduction to Microbiology and aseptic techniques.
- How to prepare and set up a laboratory space for microbiological research.
- Prepare nutrient broths and agar plates to cultivate different bacterial species.
- Design and carry out antibiotic sensitivity tests on different bacteria species using a host of different real world pharmaceutical antibiotics.
- Set up an overnight incubation of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis cultures to preform Gram staining on day two.
Day 2 ( Sun 31st May: 09:30-16:00)
- Observe bacterial growth from the overnight incubation, noting and analysing differential plate coverage and growth patterns.
- Measure areas of inhibition from antibiotic sensitivity tests and document and discuss bacterial-antibiotic interactions.
- Learn about the evolution and development of antibacterial resistance in modern microbiology.
- Perform Gram staining tests on the cultivated bacteria visualising the results and stained slides under a microscope.
- Use the data generated by antibiotic sensitivity tests and Gram staining to determine which antibiotics should be used to eliminate Gram-positive or Gram-negative bacteria.
These are core techniques used in microbiological research and laboratory-based roles.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Work more confidently in a microbiology laboratory setting
- Prepare media and culture bacteria using standard microbiology techniques
- Design and carry out antibiotic sensitivity testing
- Analyse bacterial growth and inhibition patterns
- Perform Gram staining and interpret results using microscopy
- Understand how microbiology techniques apply to research posts, jobs, and laboratory projects
Who Should Attend?
- Undergraduate science participants looking to strengthen their microbiology skills
- Graduates and postgraduates preparing for research posts or laboratory roles
