Micro mosaics originated in the Vatican in the 1500s as a way to preserve deteriorating paintings. Artists carefully reinterpreted these works in glass, creating pieces that would endure for centuries—earning them the name “eternal paintings.”In this class, you’ll be introduced to the authentic Roman filati technique once used by Vatican artisans. Filati, meaning “thread,” refers to the delicate strands of glass that can be drawn so fine they resemble fibers. Today, this technique is considered a rare and specialized art form, practiced by only a small number of contemporary artists.
Through guided, hands-on instruction, you’ll learn to create your own filati from smalti glass sourced from Murano, Italy. You’ll shape and stretch the glass while hot, cut it into tiny tesserae, and compose your own micro mosaic design. You’ll also make traditional Roman stucco adhesive and gain experience using specialized tools, including glass cutters and a torch.
By the end of the class, you’ll have completed two original pieces of jewelry set in sterling silver—along with a foundational understanding of this historic and intricate art form.
No prior jewelry experience is required—just curiosity and a willingness to work with detail and precision.
