Michael Martin Murphey’s five‑decade musical journey has taken him across genres and across the country, topping the Pop, Country, Western, and Bluegrass charts while continually reinventing himself. A proud Texan and loyal American son, he’s best known for iconic hits like “Wildfire,” “Carolina In The Pines,” “What’s Forever For,” “Long Line of Love,” “Geronimo’s Cadillac,” and “Cowboy Logic,” spanning 35 albums and countless stages. His songs have been recorded by legends including Kenny Rogers, John Denver, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Lyle Lovett, and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
A pioneer of the 1970s Austin “Cosmic Cowboy” movement, Murphey helped shape the Outlaw Country era and earned early acclaim with his debut Geronimo’s Cadillac, prompting Rolling Stone to call him “the best new songwriter in the country.” He went on to score major Pop and Country hits through the 70s and 80s, earning the Academy of Country Music’s “Best New Artist” twelve years after his first pop success. His work with symphonies, beginning with 1985’s “A Night in the American West,” led to hundreds of orchestral performances across the U.S. and Canada.
In 1990, Murphey returned to his roots with Cowboy Songs Vol. 1, the first cowboy record to go gold since Marty Robbins, inspiring Warner Bros. to launch the Warner Western imprint. He later founded the celebrated Western cultural festival “Westfest,” and continued breaking genre boundaries with his Grammy‑nominated Buckaroo Blue Grass series. His many honors include gold and platinum records, the Charlie Russell Award, five Wrangler Awards, recognition from the Academy of Country Music, and induction into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame. His 2018 release Austinology reunited him with fellow Texas icons, and in 2019 he received the Western Heritage Lifetime Achievement Award for his enduring commitment to the music and spirit of the American West.
