Join us for our first lecture in the ‘Public Lecture’ series.We are honoured and proud to open the lecture series with the highly esteemed Prof. Stanley Fiorini whose work on Medieval and Early Modern Maltese history has been seminal in the field.
This lecture will focus on the Apostolic Visit by Mons. Pietro Dusina in 1575. This important visitation, which happened 450 years ago, offers an invaluable insight into 16th century Maltese life, not only from an ecclesiastical point of view, but also touches on all aspects of social life.
It looks at important aspects of Dusina’s report, particularly, the jurisdictional disputes he had to unravel, his commitment to ensure the adherence of the diocese to the reforms of the Council of Trent, the need to establish the much-needed Tribunal of the Inquisition, to help resolve problems of incompetence and illiteracy of the Maltese clergy, to effect a smooth transition from existing Gallican practices, and to come to terms with the presence of Uniate Greek parishes introduced in 1530 by the Order of St John.
