Sunday 21 July, 3pm | Old Museum Concert HallSchumann | Manfred Overture
Tchaikovsky | Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 23
Rachmaninoff | Symphonic Dances Op. 45
Conductor: Marco Bellasi
Soloist: Ayesha Gough
Welcoming Marco Bellasi as conductor for the first time, the BPO brings you a concert filled with the best of Romanticism.
From the unforgettable opening bars to the explosively chromatic finale, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto, No. 1 combines exquisite musicality with extraordinary technique. The gothic drama of Lord Byron’s works is alluded to in the Manfred Overture, Schumann’s response to to the eponymous Faustian drama.
The Symphonic Dances, Rachmaninoff’s last major work, is filled with a vibrant and rhythmic energy. Shifting, restless harmonies give way to unusual tone colours, culminating in an extraordinary finale that has the Dies Irae, representing Death, in battle with the Resurrection.
