Acclaimed Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer Meshell Ndegeocello’s career is one of originality, longevity, and musical truths. She’s known for her journeys into soul, R&B, jazz, hip-hop, and rock, and her Blue Note debut Omnichord Real Book is a visionary, expansive, and deeply jazz-influenced album that marks the start of a new chapter in her trailblazing career.
Ndegeocello has defied and redefined the expectations for women, queer artists, and for black music for over the past thirty years and remains one of few women who write the music, sing the songs, and lead the band. A bass player above all else, Ndegeocello’s “warm, fat, and melodic groove” is her signature and she has played alongside the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Alanis Morrisette, The Blind Boys of Alabama, John Medeski, Chaka Khan and many others. She credits Sting, Jaco Pastorius, Family Man Barrett, and Stevie Wonder as her bass-playing influences.
Omnichord Real Book, produced by saxophonist Josh Johnson, highlights some of Ndegeocello’s frequent collaborators including Johnson, keyboardist Jebin Bruni, guitarist Chris Bruce, and drummers Abe Rounds and Deantoni Parks as well as many guest artists including Jason Moran, Ambrose Akinmusire, Joel Ross, Brandee Younger, and features new original material that “taps into a broad spectrum of her musical roots.” Its title is derived, in part, from the Omnichord, an electronic instrument that produces an intriguing harp-like chiming timbre and that sound opens the album with a tune entitled, “Georgia Ave,” “a sonic homage to a main thoroughfare that runs north-south through Washington D.C.”
