À l'occasion de son exposition personnelle à Lafayette Anticipations, Meriem Bennani met en scène un orchestre d’un nouveau genre à la croisée d’une symphonie et d’un soulèvement, et transforme la Fondation en vaste caisse de résonance.
Déployée sur toute la hauteur du bâtiment, l’installation sonore Sole Crushing réunit plus d’une centaine de tongs et de claquettes qui jouent une composition musicale. Rendues vivantes, les chaussures frappent de leurs semelles divers supports et créent ainsi un ensemble insolite de percussions.
Meriem Bennani explore le vivre ensemble et la place de l’individu dans la collectivité. Tantôt en chœur, tantôt en solistes, à l’unisson ou en réponse les unes aux autres, ces tongs sans corps évoquent les individus d’une foule en mouvement, dans une manifestation, un stade ou une cérémonie de dakka marrakchia. Geste simple et banal, ce claquement de tong, une fois démultiplié, unit le groupe dans une même pulsation, celle d’une force qui dépasse l’individu.
Pour cette réinterprétation inédite de l'œuvre initialement présentée dans l’exhibition For My Best Family à la Fondazione Prada en 2024-25, l’artiste invite Reda Senhaji (Cheb Runner) à composer une nouvelle bande-son et crée une installation spécialement pensée pour les espaces de Lafayette Anticipations.

For her solo exhibition at Lafayette Anticipations, Meriem Bennani is presenting a monumental orchestra which will transform the Fondation into a vast sound box.
Spread throughout the floors of the building, the sound installation Sole crushing brings together over two hundred flip-flops which play a musical composition mixing symphony and riot.
The footwear comes to life, striking different surfaces with its soles and creating an unusual array of percussive sounds. Meriem Bennani explores ways of being together and the individual’s place within the community.
Whether as a chorus, or as soloists, in unison or in response to each other, these flip-flops evoke the individuals that make up a moving crowd, whether in a protest, a stadium, or a dakka marrakchia, a traditional Morrocan musical ceremony. The simple, banal clapping of a flip-flop unites the group in a single pulse—that of a force that transcends the individual.
For this reinterpretation of the work originally presented in the exhibition For My Best Family at Fondazione Prada in 2024–25, the artist has invited Reda Senhaji (Cheb Runner) to compose a new soundtrack and designed a site-specific installation for the Lafayette Anticipations spaces.
