Join us for Mercury Reads a series of lively rehearsed readings celebrating local voices and fresh new writing. Each event spotlights an exciting playwright from our region, giving audiences the chance to see new stories take shape for the very first time.In this session, join us in the Upstairs Bar on Thu 19 Mar at 4pm as we look at Mercury Reads: Hopelessly in Love by Giannini Hemmings.
On Tricky’s 50th birthday, his group of friends decide to meet at his record shop, years have passed, friendships have lasted, but old wounds still have not healed.
Thirty years prior, the group was thrust together by a chance meeting at a Jamaican Nine Night, where relationships were formed and love blossomed. Fitzy and Marcia’s relationship is the glue that bonded the group together.
Set against the rise of the Lovers Rock music scene in the late 70s to early 80s, and intertwining with the present day, this story explores identity, love, friendship, betrayal, and one of the most iconic periods in Black British history.
