About this Event
The School of Arts and Humanities at ECU in association with AANZCA presents:
Mental Health and Wellbeing in Creative Careers: What Makes You Happy Can Also Make You Sick
This morning seminar and panel features Professor Mark Deuze, Department of Media Studies, University of Amsterdam, whose research and forthcoming book focuses on mental health in the communication and media industries in Australia and internationally.
Professor Deuze will explore systemic issues throughout the media industries, explain what is particular about wellbeing in media and communication work, and discuss what is being (and can be) done.
Mark argues that the only way this industry can adequately address these significant issues – as many media workers experience problems at work – is not just to provide workers access to mindfulness apps, counselling sessions or the occasional health-symposium, but to fundamentally reconsider the way it thinks about and subsequently organises the work.
Also featured will be Liz Hammond, Creative Director at the advertising agency, Rare, who will discuss her own lived experience related to mental health and the agency’s proactive approach to mental health and wellbeing with the agency’s staff.
Join us to discuss and explore mental health in our creative fields – what the issues are and some ways to address them.
