Memory Palace: The Words and Worlds of Bukit Larangan

During this 90-minute walk, Ng Yi-Sheng will explore the lasting cultural legacy of precolonial Singapore. Visiting multiple sites in the vicinity of Fort Canning Hill, he’ll reveal how the 14th century kingdom lives on in the form of folk memories, rituals, monuments, theatre and fictions, including his newly published novel Utama.

Starting from the National Museum, the walk will trace a path past the National Archives, the Sang Nila Utama Garden and the Keramat Iskandar Shah, before concluding at Fort Canning Hill MRT station, sharing tidbits of Singaporean cultural history all the way.
This walk is only open to Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents. By buying a ticket you confirm that you are a Singapore citizen or Permanent Resident.

Time: 7.30PM-9PM
What to Wear: Light clothing appropriate for night walk . We'll just be going up and down Fort Canning Hill; you can wear long sleeves and long pants if you're worried about bug bites.

NG YI-SHENG
Ng Yi-Sheng is a Singaporean fictionist, poet, playwright, researcher and activist with a keen interest in Southeast Asian history and myth. His books include the bestselling historical fantasy novel Utama, the children’s history book Twisted Temasek, and the short story collection Lion City, and the poetry collections last boy, A Book of Hims and Loud Poems for a Very Obliging Audience. He served as an organizer of IndigNation: Singapore’s Pride Season and the Southeast Asian Queer Cultural Festival. His website is ngyisheng.com, and he tweets and Instagrams at @yishkabob.
