Tepri Barman was born in Ranishankail Upazila of Thakurgaon. In 1971 Liberation War, Razakars handed her over to the Pakistani army. For seven months, she endured sexual abuse and humiliation in the military camp. After independence, she gave birth to Sudhir, a war child. For bearing the child of the enemy, she and her son were ostracized by the village community. The documentary Born Together (জন্মসাথী), directed by Shabnam Ferdousi, portrays the story of their lifelong struggle. In 2017, she was officially honored as a Birangona freedom fighter.
On Tuesday, May 12, she passed away at her home. In the final years of her life, she finally received the respect and recognition she deserved. Her body was draped in the national flag in her home courtyard, and the nation paid tribute to her with an official gun salute and bugle performance.
In memory of Tepri Barman, a special screening of the documentary Born Together (জন্মসাথী) and an open discussion have been organized. The documentary was jointly produced by the Liberation War Museum and Ekattor Media Ltd.
