Dr. Toler will discuss her book Heroines of Mercy Street: Real Nurses of the Civil War, which explores the real nurses of the Civil War and the transformation of ordinary buildings into wartime hospitals. The topic resonates deeply with Marietta history: the Marietta History Center building itself once served as a hotel and was later used as a hospital during the Civil War, much like the structures featured in Heroines of Mercy Street.
Armed with a PhD in history and an infectious curiosity, Pamela D. Toler writes historical nonfiction for a popular audience. She is known for going beyond familiar narratives to tell stories from the other side of the battlefield, the gender line, and the color bar. Toler is the author of ten books for children and adults, including Women Warriors: An Unexpected History, The Dragon From Chicago: The Untold Story of an American Reporter in Nazi Germany, and Heroines of Mercy Street: Real Nurses of the Civil War.
