Steeped in the classical tradition of Yamane-Ryu Kobudo as handed down through Oshiro Chojo, and informed by contemporary insight through the research and teachings of Hanshi Patrick McCarthy, this event focuses on functional, practical kobudo that complements and enhances karate practice.
Historically, karate and kobudo were often taught side by side. Over time, these traditions became separated, yet their relationship remains deeply interconnected.
This seminar revisits that relationship; demonstrating how traditional weapons training refines posture, footwork, timing, distancing, and power generation, while offering instructors a clear framework for integrating kobudo into their own dojo curriculum.
Training will focus primarily on bōjutsu, the hallmark of Yamane-ryu Kobudo, characterised by swift circular motion, twisting thrusts, vibrant body dynamics, and pliable footwork.
Participants will also have the opportunity to study Sai (metal truncheon) and tonfa (single-handed baton), with an emphasis on functional skill development rather than performance-based choreography.
Instruction will be led by:
Shihan Bill Johanson (Australian Shibucho) Shihan Robert King, Shidoin Wolfgang Vogel and Shidoin Reece Cummings.
While guided by highly experienced instructors, the focus of the seminar remains firmly on content; developing practical skills, understanding core principles, and gaining tools that directly enhance both personal practice and teaching.
This seminar is suitable for karate practitioners, kobudo practitioners, and instructors seeking to deepen their understanding of traditional Okinawan weapons and their application in a modern training context.
