The 2026 Melbourne Short Film Festival will take place on the 29th of March at the Thornbury Picture House, returning for its 8th edition. This year's curated program of 12 compelling short films from Australia and around the world touches upon current issues as well as identity, relationship and societal themes.
Taking place at Melbourne's favourite indie cinema, the annual cinematic event brings a wide range of genres, including fiction and documentary and animated films. The hand-picked short films highlight fresh voices of rising talents, spotlighting diverse perspectives.
From the drama coming-of-age 'Lincoln' by Jake James Whitford to a glimpse into Melbourne’s vibrant drag scene with Jeanie Kane's 'Big Johnny' and the relationship of a young Japanese couple living in a temple in the mountains in Takanobu Matsudaira's ‘Yaita'. Bold films that tell different stories from around the world.
The MSFF provides a platform for independent filmmakers to connect with a mixed audience and fellow creatives. In its 8th edition this year, the Festival has become a meeting point for the city's cinema lovers.
