Melbourne Animal Save Vigil - Diamond Valley Pork Melbourne Animal Save is holding a vigil for pigs at Diamond Valley Pork slaughterhouse in Laverton North.
This vigil will take place on Sunday 14th December from 10am-12:00 midday.
(Please try to arrive a few minutes early as the safety briefing will take place at 10AM sharp)
PLEASE NOTE: ALL VIGIL ATTENDEES MUST AGREE TO AND ABIDE BY THE SAVE MOVEMENT CODE OF CONDUCT AT ALL TIMES AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS OF THE SAFETY MARSHALL
At a vigil, we peacefully bear witness to animals who are soon to be killed. We show them kindness, and we bring public awareness to their presence and suffering. Connecting with the living animals who are being exploited in our food system can have a profound effect on our attitude and choices towards these sentient beings, who are mostly hidden from public view. It allows us to see them as individuals, not units of production.
Diamond Valley Pork is Victoria's largest pig slaughterhouse, and was one of three locations where world-first footage of pigs being stunned via gas chamber was filmed, in 2015.
The facility can slaughter 2,500 or more pigs in a single day.
All are welcome to join, including those who have never attended a vigil before. We believe that ending violence and oppression must be done with love and kindness for all beings, regardless of sex, race, species, and any other morally irrelevant factor. Melbourne Pig Save/Melbourne Animal Save is a safe space for all.
MAS is part of the global Animal Save Movement, and those taking part in a vigil must abide by the Animal Save Movement Code of Conduct. A briefing will be held on the day, but attendees should familiarise themselves with the following:
Respect to Animals
• Stay Calm: Animals are very sensitive to our energy. Approach trucks slowly, calmly and quietly so as not to frighten animals more than they are already.
• Noise: Animals are extremely sensitive to noise and are already under a great deal of stress. Consider not speaking at all or, if you must, speak in a soft and quiet tone.
• Touching: Exercise discretion when engaging with and touching the animals; don't scare them.
Safety
• Wear reflective vests (these will be supplied) or light coloured clothing to be safer near the trucks.
• Approach the truck when it's completely stopped and safe to do so. Truck drivers often cannot see you.
• Stay on the ground, do not climb on the trucks.
• Be aware of and listen to the Safety Marshalls, and look out for those around you.
Interactions with Truck Drivers and Plant Employees
• Speak to drivers, employees and police with respect, even if they do not. We are there to promote peace.
• Resist the temptation to react or respond in a negative manner to any provocation from truck drivers or employees.
• Oppose violence. Don’t fight violence with violence.
• Stay peaceful and positive. Avoid temptation to respond to negative comments with negative responses.
The Save Movement is a safe and inclusive space for all attendees and we actively support and encourage diversity within our community. if you ever have any concerns regarding equality or inclusion, please be sure to reach out to the vigil organiser who will ensure you have additional support should it be required.
This event will be held on stolen land and we acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which we work, the Wurundjeri and Woi-Worrung people of the Kulin Nation and pay our respects to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. Sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.
