Come dig into our third theme: Secrets, lies, and memoir: How much of your story is true?
Memoir is a form of creative nonfiction, a story of actual people and events told with the dramatic techniques of a novel. How do we navigate the shifting boundaries of fact, fiction, memory, and meaning as we write? Is too much fact-checking counterproductive? Does memoir effectively privilege "my truth" over "the truth"? Oh yeh, this gets messy!
We’ll discuss allll that before we settle into our writing time.
This limited-series meetup offers inspiration, accountability, and friendly support for anyone who wants to *finally* write their memoir. Note: If you’re creating an illustrated, graphic novel-style memoir, you are also very welcome to come sketch and/or write with us. We welcome writers no matter their level of experience, and we won’t be formally workshopping our writing. The only qualification is the desire to get your story down on paper or screen. You’ll come away with fresh perspectives and new work to fuel your writing practice for the week. (Psst: you can actually work on whatever you like, we won't ask you to prove it's a memoir ;o))
We’ll do a solid hour of writing, framed by memoir-relevant discussion and a little socializing. We start at 6:30 with a lively discussion about a memoir-related topic (not specific books, but relevant themes). Then at 7 pm, we write! We’ll write for 30 minutes, take a 10-min. break, then do another 30 mins. of writing. Our final half hour+ is reserved for further discussion and socializing; we can also share our work if we want to.
**When: 6:30-8:45pm, most Mondays, over 8 weeks: **Aug. 19; Sept. 9, 23, 30; Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28.
