About Dr. Mierva Kelada
Warm, vivacious, and powerful – The founding member of community healthcare is Dr. Minerva Mervat Kelada. She is a seasoned medical professional with over 30 years of experience as a doctor, director, administrator, and owner of an urgent care centre and rural health clinic. Currently serving as the Chief Medical Officer for the Imperial County Physician Medical Group, she adds that her role is quite demanding since, as she puts it, "holding such a position for several years and guiding the young medical physicians on the right path is a big risk and responsibility."
Mervat, who is based in Calexico, California (USA), is descended from several generations of Greek ancestors. She moved to the US 42 years ago with her ex-husband, attending the esteemed UCLA to get her medical degree.
Mervat, who comes from a family of missionaries, had been planning a missionary trip to Africa until it was abruptly cancelled. She arrived in the border city of Mexico and California about the same time, where there is a severe lack of access to quality healthcare and significant poverty. Inspired by the state of affairs, over thirty-two years ago, she chose to open her urgent care centre and practise there as soon as she graduated from medical school. This marked the start of the Deanza Clinics at Mervat.
She quickly became a beloved member of the community thanks to her exceptional talent and infectious joie-de-vivre. She developed a close relationship with her patients and made the experience extremely memorable by helping with some of their procedures to offer her support and make sure they didn't feel abandoned while they recovered.
Her children had grown and were enrolled in law and medical schools by this point, but sadly, she had lost two of them—one while serving in the military and the other in a serious accident. She was instantly overwhelmed by the emotional support that all of her patients showed for her, and it made her thankful to be a doctor. She says with pride, "I'd strive to be a doctor again in another life."
Expert in Medical Education, Public Speaking, Clinical Research, Family Medicine, and Strategic Planning, Mervat was appointed as an Adjunct Professor at UCSD's David Geffen School of Medicine. As a doctor and practitioner, she did a great deal of missionary work in Egypt and throughout Africa, especially in Sudan and Uganda. Over the years, she has led numerous training sessions for family medicine residents in rural family practice and assisted in the establishment of the American Academy Family Medicine Chapter of residency abroad.
Over the course of her forty-year career, Mervat filled a variety of roles, including chair of many departments, liaison physician, hospital board member, and Ph*rm*cy chair. She also dabbled in real estate, which is another passion. "I adore purchasing historic houses and renovating them. More than my medical practice, real estate helped me become wealthy, she admits.
