ABOUT THE BOOK: Unintended
Talented Army Dupuis has earned admission to a prestigious art college, where he’ll study for a career as a painter. But before he can graduate high school, golden-haired Liesel Vandt appears in his life, attracting him with her beauty and mystery.
Army’s mother, Marlene, also studied to be a painter. But having battled bipolar disorder and a crushing relationship with her mother for most of her life, she has never produced any artwork. Her mental health issues have strained the family, particularly her marriage to Armand, whose devotion and self-discipline have held them all together. A devout Catholic, Armand longs for a peaceful family life and a boat to go fishing near their hometown of Quitticas, Massachusetts.
Army grows uncomfortable when Liesel inserts herself deeper into his life, and he breaks up with her before leaving for college. Struggling to emerge from depression, Marlene meets no-nonsense Gwen Thomas, who helps revive her spirits and her painting. Armand faces a secret challenge that drives him to the confessional.
Marlene’s friendship with Gwen helps unearth a life-changing revelation. Armand finally buys his boat, but a calamity at work turns his life upside down. Army presses on with the thrill of his artistic studies, but neither he nor his family can shake Liesel Vandt.
As Liesel’s dark plans take shape, she becomes the epicenter of an escalating crisis for the entire family. The lines blur between wrong and right and crazy and sane as their lives move in directions they never intended.
