About This Session

This session is Module 3 of a three-part Anesthesia Academy series, designed to be taken in order to build a comprehensive understanding of safe and effective anesthesia practices.

Anesthetic complications can develop quickly—and recognizing early indicators is crucial for patient safety. In this module, we’ll focus on some of the most clinically significant complications encountered in everyday practice: Hypothermia, Hypotension, Hypoventilation, Hyperventilation, Hypoxemia, Cardiac Arrhythmias, and Airway obstruction.

Dr. Julie Smith, DVM, DACVAA and Justin Goodrich, LVT, will guide participants through how these complications develop, how to detect them with standard monitoring equipment, and how to intervene early using evidence-based strategies. Through practical tips, case-based discussions, and real-time decision-making exercises, participants will strengthen their ability to prevent adverse outcomes and respond confidently when complications arise.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Recognize and interpret early signs of Hypothermia, Hypotension, Hypoventilation, Hyperventilation, Hypoxemia, Cardiac Arrhythmias, and Airway obstruction.
  • Implement appropriate preventive measures and corrective interventions.
  • Use anesthesia monitoring tools more effectively to support timely clinical decisions.
  • Improve patient outcomes through proactive, safety-focused anesthetic management.

What Makes This Series Different?

To ensure every session is practical and relevant, participants receive a brief pre-event questionnaire. Your input helps tailor case discussions so the material directly addresses the challenges you face in practice.

Whether you’re a veterinary technician or a DVM, this session will give you actionable tools to enhance anesthetic safety—skills you can apply immediately in your daily workflow.

Why Attend?
  • Strengthen your ability to identify early indicators of high-risk anesthetic complications.
  • Learn evidence-based, stepwise interventions for rapid and effective responses.
  • Improve patient safety through enhanced monitoring interpretation and timely decision-making.
  • Engage in collaborative case discussions that reinforce real-world clinical application.
