About this Event
5pm Lecture in Vagelos Education Center (VEC) Room 401, followed by a 6pm light reception in VEC lobby.
Brief description of talk:
Medical error can have heartbreaking consequences for patients, medical students, and physicians. Although education on this topic often focuses on disclosure, apology, and quality improvement, most physicians are not taught to manage the complex emotions that come with harming patients. This talk explores how physicians cope with medical error and presents the concept of accountable self-forgiveness as an ethical framework to aid recovery and growth.
About the speaker:
Dr. Hata provides primary care to children and adults at Mass General Hospital. She is passionate about supporting physicians in the joys and challenges of their careers and creates space for physicians to reflect and share experiences with one another, through reflective practice sessions, Balint groups, coaching, and creative writing. She leads physician support interventions for residents and faculty in the Departments of both Medicine and Pediatrics and is a Co-Principal Investigator for a study on Physician Coping after Medical Error.
About the Lectureship:

An internist, Dr. Lisio came to Columbia in 1961, and led an active clinical practice until his retirement in 2015. Dr. Moore is a 1969 graduate of Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons. She is a medical oncologist on the faculty of Weill Cornell Medicine.
