Join us for a screening of the 38-minute documentary The Killing of Shireen Abu Akleh followed by a Media Literacy Workshop.
About this Event

On May 11, 2022, Shireen Abu Akleh — Palestinian-American journalist and beloved face of Al Jazeera Arabic — was shot and killed by Israeli occupation forces while covering their raids on the Jenin Refugee Camp in the West Bank. She was doing her job. She was targeted for it.

Join us for a screening of the 38-minute Al Jazeera English Fault Lines documentary The Killing of Shireen Abu Akleh (2022, dir. Majdi Bannoura) — followed by a discussion led by Jennifer Zacharia, a local Palestinian-American writer and human rights lawyer— and Shireen’s cousin.

What to expect

• Documentary screening

• Intimate Q&A and discussion with Jennifer Zacharia

• Media literacy workshop: how Palestine is (mis)covered in mainstream media

• A free original zine for every attendee

• Compiled media clip analysis

This event is for anyone who wants to understand what really happened to Shireen, how her killing fits into Israel's broader war on journalists, and how to read mainstream Palestine coverage with a more critical eye. Content Advisory: All ages are welcome to attend; however, please be advised that the film contains real-world footage of military violence and themes of grief. We recommend this event for ages 14+ or for younger viewers with parental guidance--at least for the first hour during the film screening.

About the film

The Killing of Shireen Abu Akleh is a 2022 documentary produced by Al Jazeera English’s Fault Lines series. Directed by Majdi Bannoura, it investigates the circumstances of Shireen’s killing and holds Israeli forces accountable through testimony, forensic analysis, and witness accounts.
