In his poem ‘The Botanic Garden (Part V)’ Erasmus Darwin wrote:“So when MEDEA to exulting Greece
From plunder’d COLCHIS bore the golden fleece;
On the loud shore a magic pile she rais’d”
But who is MEDEA? Why is MEDEA interpreted as a protofeminist?
Following her successful sold-out talk, ‘The Warrior Princess’, Sundeep Braich will give a talk exploring MEDEA to commemorate International Women’s Day 2025. From Medea in the adventures of Jason and the Argonauts through to the historical ship HMS Medea that carried the infamous Koh-i-Noor diamond to England in 1850, this talk will revolve around Frederick Sandys’ 1868 painting of Medea held by Birmingham Museums Trust.
Ticket holders will be entered into a competition to win a 1000 piece jigsaw depicting Medea 1868 by Frederick Sandy.
