About this Event
The first thing you notice about McKinley James is his serious mix of Motown soul and blues-based guitar playing. It doesn’t sound like the type of “blues” you get from traditional purveyors of the genre, but instead from a guitarist who understands chord theory so well you could swear you’re hearing a horn section sometimes. While guitar stores reverberate with licks from ham-fisted modern bluesmen when they don’t know shuffle from shinola, McKinley would walk into that guitar store and summon the spirits of his own idols, nearly forgotten pioneers like Otis Rush and Little Milton.
I first got to see a McKinley James video via a youtube video that my good friend Chris at Bopflix posted filmed from the Nashville Boogie sometime around 2018/2019 (pre pandemic days) and I was completely blown away by the sound that he and and his father on drums you may remember sitting behind JD McPherson and also a masked up member of Los Straightjackets! Drawing from Blues and Rock n Roll influences from labels like Chess from Chicago and Excello Nashville records especially but also injecting their own stamp in a fantastic way. A couple of covers in the style of the awesome Blasters plus many other Rockin and Roots perfomers.
