If there’s anyone who embodies the liveliness and ebullient joy of 18th-century music, it’s Nicholas McGegan, “one of the finest baroque conductors of his generation” (London Independent). Having conducted The Four Seasons countless times, McGegan says it never fails to captivate listeners with its familiar scenes set to ear-catching melodies: “It’s great to hear [Vivaldi] imitate bird songs or rivers or fountains or the summer bugs—they’re still with us—and the stomping of feet and skating are things that people still do. He had a wonderful way of turning these things into music, and memorable music at that.”The Chaconne from Mozart’s Idomeneo and Haydn’s “Surprise” Symphony show these composers at the top of their games. Clever and sophisticated, humorous and bright, the Chaconne breaks the rules of ballet, and the symphony makes a bang you won’t forget.
