About this Event
Speculative fiction is a broad genre. Also known as “what-if” books, spec fic changes the laws of what’s real or possible in society as we know it, then speculates on the outcome of these changes. Think sci-fi, fantasy, dystopian, etc!
Our pick for May is When we Were Real by Daryl Gregory. This is a sharp, funny, and deeply human road-trip novel set in a future where reality itself has been revealed as a simulation. As a diverse group of travelers journey to witness the mind-bending glitches in the system, their personal quests for meaning, connection, and redemption begin to intertwine. Blending science fiction with emotional insight, the novel explores what makes a life feel real when everything, including the world, might be temporary.
