MAY-DAY PROCESSION- CROWNING QUEEN ARAWEELO
This May Day parade explores the traditions of international Labour Day parades and dance within Somali cultures. Join us through this magaical procession, experience dance, live music, fashion and witness the crowning of Queen ARAWEELO a figure in Somali folklore who reflects the essence of resilience in the face of adversity, played by Caleemo Saar.
This parade is the culmination of Our Making Workshops- public costume and performance from our Caleemo Saar Jam Sessions that have taken place in April 2024.
We will be providing accessories for people to to style themselves on the day to celebrate amongst the Queen !!!
If you would like to take part please Come all dressed in white to be styled with accessories and coloured garments by our Numbi team.

This activation will happen in and around the Somali Museum Atelier; a Numbi takeover creative space created in collaboration between LCF and Numbi Arts’ Somali Museum UK, specially curated by Kinsi Abdulleh for LCF’s Making More Mischief exhibition to explore the rituals of belonging and togetherness through the lens of British-Somali culture.
The Atelier serves as an invitation a platform for cross-cultural exchange, delving into stories of both traditional and contemporary music, dance, folk figures and rituals surrounding weddings and poetry. Featuring commissioned work by Numbi associated Somali artists and designers including Maryam Jaama and Hoda Kadiye.

MAKING MORE MISCHIEF
The MAY DAY PARADE is response to LCF’s major new exhibition; Making More Mischief: Folk Costume in Britain, 9 April-22 June, it is generously supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
GETTING HERE
MAY DAY RAVE on Thursday 2 May, 6-9pm. The event will begin at 6pm. This is a guestlist event, say your name at the door upon your arrival for entry.
If you are arriving via Stratford Station, please follow the PURPLE ROUTE and walk towards the London Aquatics Centre and when you reach Sadler’s Wells on your right, turn right onto the public realm (Sadler’s Wells is still on the right-hand side) towards our East Bank campus.
If you are arriving from Stratford International, please follow the BLUE ROUTE and then merge onto the PURPLE ROUTE towards the London Aquatics Centre and when you reach Sadler’s Wells on your right, turn right along the public realm (Sadler’s Wells is still on the right-hand side) towards our East Bank campus.
If you are arriving from Hackney Wick, please follow the RED ROUTE down Carpenter’s Road, crossing Carpenter’s Road Lock and then over Tallow Bridge which leads directly onto LCF UAL’s waterfront entrance on the mezzanine level.
