Our May concert is an all-Russian affair and opens with La Mer by Alexander Glazunov, a Fantasy for Orchestra
based on his trip to the Crimea. Scored for huge forces, the work is a sumptuous, Wagnerian inspired journey
across the Crimean Peninsula. Shostakovich, a student of Glazunov, wrote his powerful 1st Violin Concerto
between 1947 & 1948, and held back the work until the environment in Soviet Russia had improved in 1955. The
amazing violinist Andy Long joins us for what will be a highly emotive performance. Maurice Ravel’s
orchestration of Modest Mussorgsky’s most famous work, Pictures at an Exhibition closes the concert so do join us for the journey around Mussorgsky’s gallery.
