In order to attend the AGM you must be a member in good standing of OPIRG. This means that if you are a UofT student (all Graduates and St George Undergrads and Part-time Undergrads) you have not opted out or if you are a community member, that you have registered and paid a membership fee beforehand. Eligible members must demonstrate a commitment to social and environmental justice, a willingness to learn and equity.

What is the Board of Directors?

The Board of Directors are elected by the membership, or they are appointed by a current Board.

The Board does not attend to specific social justice issues, but instead focuses on the long-term well being of the organization and supports the organization in carrying out its mandate of social and environmental justice work.

The Board makes decisions regarding activist training for volunteers, finances and yearly budget, overall planning and programming, the hiring of staff, and the allocation of funds and resources to support action groups, campaigns, and events.

Collectively, the Board operates as the employer of the CUPE 1281 staff, which includes our Programming Coordinator and Finance and Admin Coordinator.

Why join the board?

As a board member you will receive training in:

• the financial management and governance of a non-profit organization
• consensus-based decision-making
• how to facilitate and participate in meetings
• how to be an employer in a unionized workplace

The skills that you will learn as a Board member will be a major asset to you in other organizations.

What does it take to be on the Board?

• Be an OPIRG member (full-time UofT students are already members; you can become a member for $3-30)
• make a commitment of around 4 – 6 hours per week; This includes biweekly meetings of two hours
• Uphold the OPIRG Toronto mandate, policies, and procedures
• Be committed to learning about and confronting the many forms of oppression
• Be passionate about social and environmental justice
• Be willing to work cooperatively with staff, other Board members, and volunteers
• Have an interest in understanding how non-profits work, including staff/employer relations, policies and finances
• Have a desire to develop new skills

How to apply

The process for the nomination is quite simple. We just ask that you submit a short statement on why you would like to join the board and any highlights of your experience (max 200 words), and a brief bio that tells us a little about who you are (max 150 words).

At our next board meeting, which happens biweekly, our board members will read your statement and bio, and if they don’t have any follow-up questions for you they will make a decision to bring you on board!
