Max Mahler Quintet Journey To The West SuiteAbout this Event
Journey To The West is a classic work of Chinese Buddhist Literature written by Wu Cheng’en during the Ming Dynasty. It is the mythologized account of a monk venturing west to bring Buddhist scriptures back to China. Panamanian-American jazz guitarist Max Mahler was inspired to write a suite representing the work as a whole, converting its fantastical characters and themes into hard bop — echoing the music of Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, and Wayne Shorter. The guitarist is joined by Tosh Kachad on drums and Felix Hartley on bass, as well as saxophonist Theo Kornblum and trombonist Basil Moore.
