MJR LATIN PROJECT
Infused with vibrant Latin rhythms and a fresh, contemporary edge, the Tampa Bay-based Latin Jazz Ensemble stands out as one of Florida's premier Latin jazz bands. Founded by the esteemed Cuban bassist and composer Mauricio J. Rodriguez, the ensemble burst onto the scene during the St. Petersburg Latin Jazz Festival in July 2021 with the release of Rodriguez's captivating album, “Luz.”
The Mauricio J. Rodriguez (MJR) Latin Project boasts a lineup of exceptionally talented musicians, including Grammy-winning saxophonist Zach Bornheimer, the dynamic pianist Pablo Arencibia, and the versatile drummer Andy Fornet, who previously added his rhythms to Orquesta Revé and Charanga Habanera in Cuba. Alongside them, conguero and percussionist Carlos Javier Navarro weaves intricate beats that draw audiences into the heart of each performance.
This ensemble not only revisits the rich traditions of Latin jazz but also redefines them, crafting original compositions that blend intense Latin rhythms with fleeting nods to the legendary figures of musical history. Their work is a testament to the enduring allure of Latin music, updated with modern twists that make each performance unforgettable.
Following the rave reviews for their debut album *Luz*, Rodriguez and his band are more committed than ever to their artistic vision. The album's national and international success has not only affirmed their significant talent but also fueled their passion, promising exciting new chapters for this dynamic collective.
“Luz is filled with memorable themes and contrasting moods, giving listeners strong examples of Mauricio J. Rodriguez’s talents as both a bassist and an arranger-composer. It expands the world of Latin jazz.” (Bass Magazine)
“Luz is imaginative Latin jazz, and Mauricio J. Rodriguez is a composer deserving of wider recognition.” (The Arts Fuse by Allie Michie)
