“Maundy” is an English form of the Latin word “mandatum” which means “commandment.” The over-all theme of the service is on Jesus giving his disciples a new commandment that they should “love one another even as I have loved you.” The love which Jesus demonstrates comes in both his example of servanthood as he washes his disciples feet and in his gift of himself in the bread and wine of Holy Communion. The service this evening begins with the sermon and an invitation to confession with the absolution and the sharing of the peace. The service is done this way as a close to the penitential season of Lent. The long awaited absolution - missing since Ash Wednesday - is finally spoken to the congregational members as they come forward to receive it individually. This action recalls the ancient practice of reconciling the penitents who were either under church discipline or awaiting an Easter baptism.
