Maundy Thursday is a beloved Foothills tradition. Designed to evoke the setting of the Last Supper and the final evening Jesus shared with his disciples before the crucifixion, our gathering begins with a simple meal inspired by foods common to the ancient Near East such as pita bread, hummus, olives, dates, and fruit. The meal is intentionally modest and communal, encouraging reflection on hospitality, humility, and the shared table that characterizes the biblical narrative.
Following the meal, we transition into a Tenebrae service, a solemn liturgy commemorating the darkness and sorrow surrounding the arrest and suffering of Jesus. During the service, scripture passages recounting the events of Holy Week are read while candles are gradually extinguished, symbolizing the increasing darkness of the world as Christ approaches the crucifixion. The service ends in quiet reflection, inviting participants to contemplate sacrifice, loss, and the approaching hope of Easter.
