Geoff Spearpoint will present a very personalised view of his career so far, bringing his passion for remote places to a wide audience.
Geoff began tramping in 1966 when he was 15, which grew into a passion for transalpine trips and climbing. He has had a variety of careers however employment has mostly been a means to an end, and his real career continues to revolve around the mountains.
He has been on expeditions to the Northern Patagonian Icecap, Himalayas, Karakoram Range, Yunnan and Tibet and worked in the Dry Valleys for Antarctica New Zealand. However, in the background, there were always transalpine tramping and climbing trips throughout the Southern Alps, where he explored interesting corners including the Ngapunatoru Plateau, Olivine Ranges, Volta, Hooker Wilderness, Cook area, Godley, Gardens, the Bracken Snowfield, and other remote places.
Geoff is perhaps best known for the books he has written, including his latest, ‘The Great Unknown’, a photo and text essay of Southern Alps wilderness trips, designed to encourage and inspire more journeys, and for his behind-the-scenes roles in successful television series. In recent years, Geoff has been actively involved in the care of our back country assets and is a founding member of the Backcountry Trust Board.

Mature Mountaineer meetings are a NZ Alpine Club initiative providing an opportunity for older members of the NZAC & affiliated clubs to get together, share and hear stories (usually from an invited speaker), and have afternoon tea. The intention is to provide a social gathering for those less likely to go out to evening events. The concept has been successful in Christchurch (since 2006), Auckland and Wellington. The functions are open to all interested outdoor enthusiasts and are made possible thanks to support from Tūpiki Trust.
